This Halloween weekend, several car meets in Puerto Rico reward the best decorated car or the best costume. If you've never decorated your car for Halloween, here are easy, cheap ideas, plus what to avoid so you don't damage the paint, get pulled over on the way, or break the meet's rules.
Halloween meets where you can show off your car
- Thursday 29, 7:00 p.m.: Scary Night Meet at Marshalls Carolina. The flyer asks you to bring your decorated car and come in costume, with free photo sessions. Via @NextLevelSocietyPR.
- Friday 30, 12:00 p.m.: Miata Halloween Meet at La Pinchera, Santurce. The challenge is to dress up your Miata, with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
- Friday 30, 7:30 p.m.: Femme Society – Halloween y Carros El Meet at Bayamón Oeste, with a prize for the car and the person with the most creative costume. Via @femme_societypr.
Rule #1: decorate for parked, not for the highway
The safest move is to arrive at the meet with your car "normal" and set up the decorations at the spot. That way nothing flies off on the expressway, you don't block your view and you don't draw police attention for something avoidable. Carry everything in a box or bag and give yourself 10 minutes to set up when you arrive.
Ideas that work (and don't damage paint)
Battery-powered lights
Orange or purple battery LED strings completely change the car in night photos. Put them inside the car, in the open trunk or around the wheels once parked. You don't need to wire anything into the electrical system.
Cobwebs, pumpkins and loose props
Fake cobwebs on the mirrors and grille are a classic. Plastic or LED pumpkins on the hood or on the ground in front of the car set the scene. Put a clean microfiber under any prop that sits on the paint.
Themed trunk
If your car is a hatchback, SUV or pickup, the open trunk is your stage: a cardboard "coffin," careful dry-ice fog, or a scene with figures. It's the photo that gets shared the most.
Matching car and owner
The costume that lands best is the one that talks to the car: a Miata as a character, a matte black car as a Batmobile, a white car as a "ghost." At meets that award car and costume separately, this can score points in both.
Magnets and painter's tape
For letters or shapes on the body, use car magnets or painter's tape and remove it that same night. Avoid regular tape, contact paper or any adhesive that tomorrow's sun will "bake" onto the clear coat.
What to avoid
- Covering lights or the plate. If you'll drive with something on, it must not cover headlights, signals or the license plate.
- Loose items on the hood or roof while moving. What flies off on the expressway lands on another driver.
- Dark vinyl or "effects" on windows. In Puerto Rico the law requires window tint to allow at least 35% light transmission. Covering glass to look "scary" can put you below that.
- Full masks at certain meets. Femme Society, for example, bans masks, balaclavas and ski masks. Read the flyer before you pick a costume.
- Fire, sparks or fireworks. No real candles near fuel and upholstery.
Tips for good photos
- Arrive early to grab a spot with decent light or a clean background.
- Stick to one color palette (orange + purple, or red + black). It looks more professional than mixing everything.
- Leave room around the car so photographers can work. At Scary Night, for example, the page invites media and creators to collaborate.
- Share with credit: tag the photographer and the meet.
When the meet ends
Pack everything up, throw away your trash and remove any tape that same night. To review the usual etiquette, read our car meet rules in Puerto Rico and the list of what to bring to a car meet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with the car decorated?
The safest option is to set up when you arrive. If you drive with something on, it must not cover lights, plate or visibility, and it must be secured.
What material won't damage paint?
Car magnets, painter's tape removed the same day, and props sitting on a microfiber. Avoid strong adhesives and regular tape.
Which Halloween meets award decorated cars?
According to their event pages, the Miata Halloween Meet has cash prizes for dressed-up Miatas and Femme Society awards the most creative car and costume. Scary Night invites you to bring your decorated car.
