A swap meet is a flea market for car people: parts, tools and memorabilia bought, sold and traded. If you're restoring a classic or chasing a discontinued part, a swap meet in Puerto Rico can save you weeks. This guide helps you buy and sell in an orderly way.
What a swap meet is
Each person sets up a table or trunk with what they want to sell or trade: engine, body and wheel parts, accessories, tools, manuals and collectibles. Many are organized by classic car clubs, so they often have parts you won't find in stores.
Before you go
- Make a list: what you need, with the car's year, make and model.
- Part numbers: bring them if you have them.
- Photos and measurements: of the old part.
- Budget: decide before you fall in love with something.
What to bring
- Cash in small bills. Not every table takes cards or ATH Móvil.
- Tape measure and a small flashlight.
- Sturdy bags or a box.
- Gloves and wet wipes; many parts are greasy.
- Water and a cap outdoors.
How to check a used part
- Compare it with your photos and measurements.
- Look for cracks, deep rust or damaged threads.
- Moving parts should turn or slide without binding.
- For electrical parts, ask whether and how they were tested.
- Ask what car it came from and why it's for sale.
Ask about returns too. Often the sale is final.
Negotiate with respect
Haggling is part of it, with a good attitude. Greet, ask the price and make a reasonable offer. No deal? Say thanks and move on. Buying several parts at one table? Ask for a bundle price.
If you're selling
- Clean the parts.
- Show prices or know your minimum.
- Group by make, model or part type.
- Describe honestly; if something doesn't work, say so.
- Have change and an electronic payment option if you can.
- Leave your space clean.
